The rule of law is a fundamental requirement for individual freedom. Without it no economy can prosper nor individual rights be protected. Every American should have prompt and reasonable access to the courts to protect his life, liberty and property at reasonable, affordable costs. This requires clear and equitable laws and vigilant courts. During the last generation our legal system has become more and more complex, more tedious, unnecessarily invasive and unnecessarily expensive. The courts have permitted frivolous and unnecessary suits to go to trial. They have permitted extensive delaying tactics. Runaway juries have occasionally given outrageous rewards. The result has been a radical increase in the cost of litigation and fear of unreasonable consequences. Today, few people can afford to defend themselves or to pursue redress of damages they have suffered. Consequently, in Oklahoma groundless and frivolous lawsuits are used more and more for extortion.

A state in which these conditions exist will suffer from a poor economy because companies will flee and jobs will disappear. There will be a lower standard of living and lower tax collections because of lower gross domestic product and lower salaries. There will be poorer health care because of doctors fearing lawsuits and higher insurance premiums will retire early, leave the state or fail to start practices here. Finally our education and recreation will suffer. Oklahoma is one of these states with all of the adverse consequences. Oklahomans for Lawsuit Reform has selected 15 issues for lawsuit reform. They are listed below and detailed. We believe that passing laws to reform these issues will result in a more fair and equitable results in the courts, a more prosperous economy, higher tax collections, better healthcare and a higher standard of living for all Oklahomans.

OLR is a research driven organization that will pursue the following reform issues:

1.Summary Judgment Reform
2.Joint and Several Liability Reform.
3.Product Liability Reform.

(OKLAHOMA CITY) Oklahomans for Lawsuit Reform said the lawsuit reform bill HB 2661 which passed in the House and Senate during the final hours of the legislative session, shortchanges Oklahomans, and called the bill a stripped down version of the original legislation that was meant to bring “sweeping” reforms to the state.

The newest "get rich quick" scheme in America seems to be class action lawsuits. Problem is, the only ones getting rich are a handful of trial lawyers. The rest of us pay dearly -- with diminishing access to quality health care, lost jobs and economic development opportunities and higher costs for goods and services.

I’m sure many Oklahomans were as shocked as I was this Friday to read in the Wall Street Journal that Oklahoma’s court system is now for sale to the highest bidding Texas attorneys.
Because the state of Texas just passed historic lawsuit reform measures, it seems that “enterprising” Oklahoma attorneys are inviting their Texas colleagues to cross the Red River to share in the bounty from frivolous lawsuits and out-of-control settlements still tolerated and encouraged - by our state’s legal system.
